Girl in Blue Denim

Denim-wrapped in jeans and jacket
she dances to the dissonance,
to Hendrix playing Purple Haze.
A polish girl in Dublin, 1968.

She carries the weight of her faraway name
along with the lipstick and make-up
she uses in the search for love.
She is past the age of going home.

A girl alone among the living,
thinking only of the dead,
whose dark mascara makes her look
less girlish than she is,
less daughter-child than woman.

From Orchestra of Silence, Tara Telephone, 1971
